Whilst the Ewing Foundation Team works primarily with professionals, it fully supports the DfES statement that "Parents hold key information and have a critical role to play in their children's education." (Special Educational Needs Code of Practice; DfES/581/2001)
Therefore support is offered to parents in a variety of ways through:
- working closely with other organisations to plan and deliver events aimed at offering families information and advice, examples include: DELTA family days, DELTA Summer Schools
- joint projects with other organisations to provide information for families. These include "Now we're talking" a joint initiative between the Ewing Foundation, DELTA and the Elizabeth Foundation. This initiative provides information to families on the use of listening and talking for deaf children.
- responding to invitations to speak to parents and support groups.
- information for professionals in Health, Social Work, Child Care etc. so that they can support parents who choose an auditory-oral approach for their deaf child. For example "Monitoring protocol 0-3 years"
- Through the training, support and advice that the Ewing Foundation offers to teachers of the Deaf and Learning Support Assistants so that the support they offer directly to deaf children and their families complies with current good practice.
You may find other parts of the website provide useful information about particular topics such as equipment, services and publications.
Frequently asked questions by parents:
Q. Will hearing aids help?
A. Yes, they will. In fact, with properly fitted and used hearing aids, most deaf children can learn to talk. The Ewing Foundation provides courses and training materials on the use of hearing-aids, and other amplification systems.
